On 20 November 2013, The European Food Sustainable Consumption and Production (SCP) Round Table adopted, during its plenary meeting, the ENVIFOOD Protocol, a harmonised framework methodology to assess the environmental impact of food products.

Food and drink social partners highlight need for targeted action to ensure future of the sector

EFFAT (the European Federation of Food, Agriculture and Tourism Trade Unions) and FoodDrinkEurope, Europe’s food and drink manufacturing and processing industry (FDMP) social partners, published in November a major research project on employment and skills in FDMP. The study was presented at a high level conference in Brussels attended by distinguished speakers from the European Commission, academia, trade unions and industry representatives.

International Trade Developments

FoodDrinkEurope welcomed the agreement reached at the 9th WTO Ministerial Conference in Bali. The Bali package or ‘Doha lite’ deal consists of a selection of issues from the Doha Round negotiations: trade facilitation, agriculture, and issues related to development. The commitment shown in Bali sends a positive signal that the WTO can deliver on trade liberalisation. Europe’s food and drink manufacturers remain strong supporters of a balanced multilateral rules-based trading system which provides a level playing field for all countries.

Food manufacturers and retailers launch joint Guidance on EU labelling rules

In September, FoodDrinkEurope, together with EuroCommerce, launched an online Guidance brochure to facilitate a common understanding between food retailers and manufacturers in the EU on the requirements of EU labelling rules which will enter into force next year.
